Part 2 Behind the Walls: psychiatric hospitals in Ireland (Grainne and John’s story here)

‘Behind the Walls’ is a two-part documentary series charting the history of Ireland’s psychiatric hospitals. Part one lifts the lid on this vast system – during the middle decades of the 20th century, Ireland led the world in locking up more of its people per capita in mental hospitals, ahead even of the old Soviet [...]

Saturday (sorta) mellow: mostly just darn hilarious

Shrinks get patients hooked on drugs and then cut the cord

Okay, not prescribing ANY benzo to any new users is a VERY GOOD IDEA. Taking existing users off it, on the other hand is a scary proposition because the medical establishment is in COMPLETE AND TOTAL DENIAL about the seriousness and severity of WITHDRAWAL SYNDROMES.

The Heart of Forgiveness

This is a very sophisticated treatment that looks at many of the questions people have when contemplating the forgiveness of those who’ve harmed us, sometimes very badly.

thoughts on the “enemy”

Do not be too quick to assume your enemy is a savage just because he is your enemy. Perhaps he is your enemy because he thinks you are a savage. Or perhaps he is afraid of you because he feels that you are afraid of him. And perhaps if he believed you are capable of [...]

We have a drug problem in this country

I’ve often said that drugs are drugs are drugs. Some are more socially acceptable than others but their use and abuse is always similar. They may indeed be quite useful and necessary on occasion but when one starts using them daily things start getting complicated.

Love your fear

This video is in keeping with my practice of embracing all that arises within. Fear here can be translated to “anxiety,” which is the clinical term for fear which everyone at one time or another experiences with or without a diagnosis of anxiety. Psychiatry pathologizes much of the normal human experience and it’s often referred to in Buddhism as such. Normal. There are techniques to learn how to be with these normal feelings, whether they’re very intense or not.

Behind the Walls part 1: Ireland’s psychiatric hospitals, yesterday and (part 2) today

‘Behind the Walls’ is a two-part documentary series charting the history of Ireland’s psychiatric hospitals. (Had this scheduled to post in the middle of the night, but then thought perhaps it might get pulled for copyright infringement so I’ll share it now while it’s up.)

The accidental addict — benzodiazepines

A quite good documentation of what it’s like for a lot of us. Some of us have it even worse than what is depicted here.

This is a 15 year old documentary. It’s horrifying to think all this was known about this class of drugs so many years ago and yet doctors still happily prescribe benzodiazepines as “safe” drugs to treat anxiety and insomnia and many other things too.
