For all of us competitive bloggers out there

I check my technorati status everyday. I want to know I’m being read and that I’m catching someones attention. Well, I uncovered an interesting little tidbit the other day.

When I read people’s blogs I often click on the “who’s linking here” link from technorati. I long to be high in the status rankings. Two days ago I found someone who had a authority rating in the 800’s. That means they have over 800 links coming from over 800 blogs. This blog was rated among the top 3,000. My authority rating is 27, I’m in the 200,000 range for ranking. What was interesting this time was that I was able to view this person’s sitemeter (most people keep these stats private.) She gets a fifth of the readers I get! It doesn’t make much sense which leads me to the (possible) conclusion that technorati ratings do not necessarily tell you anything. I checked her stats over the last year. Consistently, month by month I get more hits.

More than anything my competitive spirit is just for fun. I know my blog will never be hugely popular, but it was still a nice little piece of information. Am I being petty? I suppose I shouldn’t give a shit. But I got a kick out of it anyway.

  1. technorati is a website that keeps track of blog activity throughout the blogosphere. Your blog will be listed there even if you haven’t claimed it yet. To see if you have go to:

    http://technorati.com/

Once you get there if you roam around you’ll figure it out. It’s not a reliable site and sometimes there are problems like it not updating some or all the stuff you and other bloggers are doing. I really don’t know how effective it is at doing anything at all. But it does give a certain amount of stats, that if nothing else, are interesting.

  2. Gianna,

What is “Technorati status”? I think I signed up for Technorati, but I am clueless as to what it is exactly.

    Any insight? Thanks.

  3. Competitiveness keeps you motivated and moving forward — if you have a healthy dose of it. If the competitiveness is extreme, you are out of balance. For someone like me, who has hardly any competitiveness, I have problems getting stuck or underacheiving.

  4. I hear you, Gianna. For the past couple of days, I’ve been wondering about what the heck I’m doing with my blog. Part of me thinks, “Well, this isn’t really going to amount to anything. I’ll never have the appeal that Furious Seasons has.” The other part of me thinks of the e-mails I get searching for advice or just dropping a friendly word. I think we’re all still trying to find our place in the blogosphere. I get technorati-crazy too, but really want to see how I can up myself in Google rankings. I’m still mystified at how people discover my blog through Google. Unless someone uses the search term, “depression introspection” or “deep intro,” I’m really not that easy to find.

Keep on keepin’ on, G. You’ve got a great blog here and I’m still looking forward to reading your posts on neurofeedback. I don’t know about anyone else, but you’re definitely one of my favorite blogs to read. I’m a fan! 🙂

  5. Your blog strikes a chord with me and I linked to your site on my updated blog at: thtp://peeradvocate.stir-crazy.org

    Keep on writing! ~denise

  6. I’m not in the least bit convinced that being competitive is healthy.

  7. Interesting… I have often wondered about Technorati and if their ratings meant anything. I haven’t been too involved with it but I’ve always been glad it’s there in case I want to be more involved. Now I know that I won’t waste my time. Thanks for the info!

Keep you competitive nature, Gianna! It definitely plays a healthy role in your life. I don’t have that nature so you will always have me beat!

  8. I think the use of Technorati [i read it too]is mainly so we can be searched for in searches outranking Pharma searches. If someone comes across one of our blogs about mental health for instance vs. [for example]lilly dot com then we are succeeding at getting the word out in this area, as a group, with all of our opinions, we create quite a large reference for people to read and learn from real people.
That is why I believe we need high readership and tecnorati status.
Not for ourselves but for the good of the cause. Awareness.Outside of the box thinking.Challenging authority and set in stone theories.
