Stattera is a SNRI, like Effexor and Cymbalta. And we already know that SSRIs can cause all the above adverse reactions. I hope this will continue to make people think twice about smacking the bipolar label on kids when what’s really going on is a serious drug reaction.
Official warnings issued: The ADHD drug Strattera CAUSES psychosis, hallucinations, mania and agitation
The manufacturer, Eli Lilly, has now changed the label for Strattera in Europe to include warnings that Strattera CAUSES “hallucinations, delusional thinking, mania or agitation in children and adolescents without a prior history of psychotic illness or mania … at usual doses”.
The rest of the article points out how often these adverse reactions lead to such diagnosis and we can imagine then that these kids are often drugged for life after such a reaction.
In the US famous psychiatrists like Dr. Joseph Biederman have convinced doctors that the manic states seen in children receiving ADHD drugs (like Concerta, Aderall and Strattera) are signs of “bipolar disorder” – not signs of drug induced brain dysfunction. This has meant that children in the US, instead of being taken off the dangerous drugs are given the most toxic substances available in psychiatry – neuroleptics (so called antipsychotics like Risperdal, Zyprexa and Abilify).

I would like to see some primary sources that conclude risperadol, zyprexa, and abilify are the “most dangerous drugs out there.” I doubt you’ll find any as there are plenty of more dangerous drugs that are being prescribed (such as older anti-psychotics, opiates, barbiturates, etc.).
While I agree that psychiatric medication is over prescribed, responding to bad science with misinformation is not a good policy.
nope sorry, there are lots of documentation that says newer antipsychotics are much worse…causing diabetes, hypoglycemia, massive weight gain, death, and much more. The only really bad obvious stuff the old ones did were tardyve dyskinesia and constipation…the new ones cause TD in any case…
you can find this info if you do a google search…I’m not gonna do it for you…the studies are out there…
and frankly the reason I’m not doing the hunting for you right now is because these drugs have make me so sick I’m a cripple…and very weak and I save my energy when I have to.
you’re still just buying into the big pharma marketing hype that has been disproved now for at least several years…

well as far as I can tell from a quick google search they are all the same class of drug, but yeah they work a little differently.
of note, strattera was first tested as a antidepressant and it failed to perform well enough (a pretty major failing considering no antidepressant out performs placebo by more than a couple of points)
My point is only that all these drugs are dangerous and can cause all the dangerous adverse reactions noted above and have and do all the time.
bipolar disorder is applied to adults all the time who react to SSRIs just like this article is inferring about children with strattera.
Strattera is just more often used in kids. I’m by no means convinced it’s actually more dangerous.
Strattera is a selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. Effexor and Cymbalta are serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors. The abbreviations are confusing…
The effects noted above are amphetamine psychosis (norephinephrine), whereas those from SSRIs are presumable caused by serotonin.
