Quote of the day

The colossal misunderstanding of our time is the assumption that insight will work with people who are unmotivated to change. Communication does not depend on syntax, or eloquence, or rhetoric, or articulation but on the emotional context in which the message is being heard. People can only hear you when they are moving toward you, and they are not likely to when your words are pursuing them. Even the choicest words lose their power when they are used to overpower. Attitudes are the real figures of speech. — Edwin H. Friedman

  1. hey Val…
I like to apply all of this to me…rather than others…since we can’t control others…as you so aptly found out…

so if I apply it to me…it’s not someone else’s fault for not listening..it’s mine for wasting my energy where it won’t be heard…

    I try to take responsibility…

I’m not saying I haven’t been in the situation you describe above many times, nor that I won’t be there again…but I feel empowered if I own my behavior…don’t know if that’s helpful or obnoxious??

  2. I need to have this engraved in stone so I shall always remain mindful:
“Communication does not depend on syntax, or eloquence, or rhetoric, or articulation but on the emotional context in which the message is being heard.”
For too many years, I blamed MYSELF for failing to communicate when the real problem was on the receiving end!
