What is bipolar disorder? Grandiosity and mania, what are they really?

“Grandiosity” is a state of reactivity brought about by having been rejected, abandoned and invalidated in childhood. In a similar vein “mania” is a dissociative state. This is something that is rarely understood. In understanding mania as dissociative we see that it is a form of post traumatic stress. We are disconnected from the body when we experience mania. We are literally ungrounded. All of this can be healed by becoming aware on all fronts. Body/mind/spirit. I have done it and I know many others who have too. Bessel van der Kolk’s 2014 book, The Body Keeps the Score, reminds me of how strongly both my physical and mental condition have been shaped by trauma. Spinal arthritis, abdominal pain, chronic muscle aches, fatigue, depression, anxiety, and many other problems combine to form an inner ledger of the abuse, bereavement, and neglect of my childhood and the uproar, frustration, and terror of my adult experience. Healing from trauma is an unlayering process

Healing from trauma as well as the waking up process, in general, is often experienced as an unlayering process. Lately I’ve been revisiting the oldest wounding again. It’s been a doozy. It’s got correlates in the body (and shows up as chronic illness via the psych drug damage–everything matters and everything is connected!) and so I’ve not been feeling well either. It’s bringing up all the stuff about the system and healers that played into my even earlier wounding.

I think a lot about why I can’t work therapeutically with people in the mental illness system. I have found that the same traumatic dynamic comes up with some frequency outside that system too with “healers” of all stripes really…alternative doctors, energy workers, therapists of various sorts, you name it…if they are in the healing profession they’ve hurt me and people like me. Some of us are like magnets to people’s ugliness. This is a sort of karmic phenomena for some of us and to change it we must become aware of how it works under the surface because it’s not a conscious process for anyone involved. Clinicians are the worst because they’re in a position of power and they deny that this is happening. That of course adds to the injurious nature of the dynamic. …

Trauma, subpersonalities, the lie and constant change (parts)

Healing, more than anything, becomes an exercise in learning to trust oneself. This is especially important when there are people about who want to force us to do things that are counterproductive to healing. Unfortunately the medical and psychological establishments perpetuates many such treatments. My village has been patch-worked together from all over the world. I’m profoundly grateful for the internet given I would not have healed otherwise.
