Everything that happens in our lives (and all our encounters with psychiatry) are SITUATIONAL. Always. There is no such thing as a clinical depression without a “situation.” That is a ludicrous and destructive fantasy. The same is true for anyone with any diagnosis. Schizophrenia, bipolar, anxiety, OCD. We all have stories and context. Diagnosis try to strip that away from us. The fact is EVERY single person with a diagnosis has an individual, unique story and context. Everything matters. Diagnosis (as currently most frequently used) are reductionistic lies that try to remove us from the fabric of our lives. …
A straight talking guide to psychiatric diagnosis
By Lucy Johnstone: A revolution is underway in mental health. If the authors of the diagnostic manuals are admitting that psychiatric diagnoses are not supported by evidence, then no one should be forced to accept them. If many mental health workers are openly questioning diagnosis and saying we need a different and better system, then service users and carers should be allowed to do so too. This book is about choice. It is about giving people the information to make up their own minds, and exploring alternatives for those who wish to do so. … [click on title for the rest of the post]

Andrew Solomon, poster child for psychiatric misdiagnosis
As a poster child for psychiatric drug treatment, Solomon has been showered with honors. He received the Society of Biological Psychiatry’s Humanitarian Award in 2008 and is a lecturer in Psychiatry at Weill-Cornell Medical College. He is on the boards of many mental health organizations.
As of March 2013, Solomon was still taking 5 psychiatric drugs a day.
But a closer at Andrew Solomon’s history suggests that his is a not a triumph of psychiatric drug treatment, but a tragedy. He has been taking a basket of psychiatric drugs every day for 20 years not for depression, but for misdiagnosed iatrogenic symptoms caused by the drugs themselves. … [click on title to read the rest]
Healing from trauma (or from a psych diagnosis)
There are people out there that get it. This video shows something that is just wonderful. We need to create more safe places for kids and adults both where they might heal from trauma histories. As I’ve often pointed out the tragic reality all to often is that the current mental health system further traumatizes rather than heals. For those of us who have been harmed by the system it becomes that much harder to find safety.
I’ve been so pleased to find in my own personal healing journey that there are pockets of people out there that really and truly and deeply get it. It finally become safe to seek help once I understood how to recognize those who get it.
Still young people and people who are disadvantaged in various ways need extra help. This sort of help needs to find them rather than vice versa. This sort of help needs to be available in all mental health establishments if we hope to really heal the population of folks who’ve been labeled mentally ill. … [click on title for the rest of the post]
Breakdown to breakthrough says, Dr. Dan Fisher (psychiatrist who overcame a schizophrenia diagnosis)
Dan Fisher says, those of us who’ve experienced psychosis and other extreme states are the ones who need to be running the mental health system. Amen, that is the truth and what is now happening in the name of care and treatment is a travesty. We’ve got a mental illness system, not a mental health system. Why not speak to those who have truly and deeply become healthy. Yes, like Dan Fisher. … [click on title for the rest of the post]
Histamine Intolerance: can be associated with folks getting psychiatric diagnosis ( #foodie friday)
So it’s clear, this sort of sensitivity unrecognized can lead to being drugged with psychiatric pharmaceuticals to begin with, so anyone taking any of these drugs might want to rule out this condition. Being that a lot of neuroleptics and benzos and it seems SSRIs too all have significant anti-histamine properties this may impact a good number of folks….It doesn’t mean there aren’t lots of other issues you’re dealing with like trauma, and grief and loss and general dismay of the state of the world and humanity, but it means you might be able to clear out one compounding factor and figure out more easily how to deal with the others. … [click on title for the rest of the post]

DSM‘s Somatoform Disorders: millions more might be diagnosed (those with withdrawal syndrome are high risk for such misdiagnosis)
The Somatic Symptom Disorder category is also of particular concern to those who are suffering from drug iatrogenesis and particularly psychiatric drug withdrawal syndromes. One of the common manifestations of debilitation when struck with withdrawal syndromes are numerous, often bizarre, acute, painful and disabling physical sensations. They include varieties of neuropathies and parasthesias. They are NOT in the patients head. And since the drug use caused these disabling symptoms more drugs to cure them is exactly the wrong way to go. This, of course, already happens. Many people are wrongly diagnosed when they start manifesting adverse reactions or acute withdrawal to drugs. They are often already disbelieved when they start reporting such adverse events.
