Epigenetics explains why genes are not deterministic in and of themselves. This is why theories of mental illness that try to blame genes are always over-simplified. Environment and what you eat and the amount of stress or trauma one lives with all are part of the picture.
Epigenetics — genes do not determine your future! (or your mental health)

Epigenetics
…the power of epigenetics, which studies the factors that determine how much or whether some genes are expressed in your body.
The Ghost in your Genes: an intro to epigenetics
Epigenetics adds a whole new layer to genes beyond the DNA. It proposes a control system of ‘switches’ that turn genes on or off and suggests that things people experience, like nutrition and stress, can control these switches and cause heritable effects in humans.

Trauma, injury, illness and waking up
It’s strange how it works, or maybe it’s not, but trauma, injury and illness can truly be passageways to waking up and it’s not generally appreciated at all in western medicine which seeks to suppress everything and thus stop that process. What we are finding is that there is some spiritual significance in the very real (and sometimes potentially deadly) physical, biological and physiological reactions that so many people on the planet are experiencing with foods that used to be safe to eat. Of course there is also environmental significance to the phenomena. …
