Epigenetics explains why genes are not deterministic in and of themselves. This is why theories of mental illness that try to blame genes are always over-simplified. Environment and what you eat and the amount of stress or trauma one lives with all are part of the picture.
Epigenetics — genes do not determine your future! (or your mental health)
…the power of epigenetics, which studies the factors that determine how much or whether some genes are expressed in your body.
Epigenetics adds a whole new layer to genes beyond the DNA. It proposes a control system of ‘switches’ that turn genes on or off and suggests that things people experience, like nutrition and stress, can control these switches and cause heritable effects in humans.
Epigenetics and the Importance of a Nurturing Society — The Primate Diaries — Miller shows that, so far, the evidence to support a direct epigenetic connection between a stressed population and societal problems has yet to be clearly demonstrated. However, this research suggests that how resources are distributed can have long-lasting effects on the next […]
It’s strange how it works, or maybe it’s not, but trauma, injury and illness can truly be passageways to waking up and it’s not generally appreciated at all in western medicine which seeks to suppress everything and thus stop that process. Tragic really. Illness/trauma etc as initiation and/or passageway to waking up is also […]

Our nervous systems have recorded each and every instance of repression and denial. We have a store of tension from our ancestors as well. This store of repressed emotions, denial, violence etc is stored in our DNA. It is our “karma” …to be transmuted in this lifetime. …
Woke up to energy that was needing expression. Fighting. I turned on youtube and searched kickboxing. OMG where have you been all my life? Anyone with stifled fight or flight energy (from PTSD) would likely benefit from this at some point. I’ve been stuck in passive attention. That is over. What a most delicious RUSH. […]
Chronic illness is trauma embodied. It’s FEAR. Unraveling the fear from our biology by calming the amygdala in any number of possible ways is the healing process. …
Food and diet has been critically important to my healing journey. Sensitivities are profound teachers that humble me again and again and teach me all manner of things about the nature of being human. I am finding more and more people who understand them in this way. What we are finding is that there is some spiritual significance in the very real (and sometimes potentially deadly) physical, biological and physiological reactions that so many people on the planet are experiencing with foods that used to be safe to eat. Of course there is also environmental significance to the phenomena. …
