This is my experience. Not everyone has heinous experiences on psychiatric drugs. Because of my work first as a social worker serving many who took these pharmaceuticals and now this blog I do know that far too many people do have seriously negative and destructive experiences on psychoactive drugs and that is why I share my own experience that people might learn that there are alternatives that most of us have never been told about. I share my experience so that people might be alerted to the fact that they can make meaningful informed choices even if their psychiatrists and other mental health providers are not sharing such information. I share my experience so that these drugs might only be used in targeted fashion in crisis so that not so many people will be so gravely harmed. …
UCLA study: non-drug treatment may reverse Alzheimer’s (these lifestyle changes are also good for all mental health)
This is a good place to start for most mental health issues of any kind, really — and, well, for general well-being too. Good health is actually rather simple. Sadly the human species has traveled a very very long way from simplicity and so it’s not always, by any means, straightforward to get back to good-health. Still we can take many meaningful steps in that direction and over time make some very big changes. I’ve seen it done again and again among those I work with and I’ve done it for myself. … [click on title to read and view more]
Nutrition and gut health, mental health and diet
Gut / intestinal health is foundational to all health including mental well-being. It’s the first thing attended to when I chose to come off psychiatric drugs. In healing my gut I needed to alter my diet. I’ve collected articles below that speak to these changes I made.

Drop that (birth control) pill – notorious for exacerbating mental health issues.

If I had remained med compliant…
**take note I am speaking about my experience of having been gravely over-medicated. This is my experience. Not everyone has heinous experiences on psychiatric drugs. Because of my work first as a social worker serving many who took these meds and now this blog I do know that far too many people do have seriously negative and destructive experiences on psychopharmaceuticals and that is why I share my own experience that people might learn that there are alternatives that most of us have never been told about. learning to deeply love and attend to the body — #foodie friday
Eat what makes you and your body healthy…this will evolve and change as your needs and understanding evolve and change. The one thing that should remain constant is that the diet should consist of mostly if not all REAL WHOLE FOOD. Beyond that whether you’re vegan, vegetarian or omnivore is UP TO YOUR BODY. The amount of raw vs. cooked food is also UP TO YOUR BODY. Whole real food…from there you have to listen and learn and be ready to change as is appropriate. … [click on title to read the rest]
Chronic pain (psych drug withdrawal induced and chronic pain in general too)
I use many methods for relief of the pain at once…including yoga and meditation and supplements and diet and epsom salt baths…like all aspects of health I’ve learned, that pain too is a deeply holistic experience. Everything matters.
I don’t imagine the combination of what works for me is going to be exactly applicable to anyone else. It’s more important to learn to listen to ones particular body and that process will never be exactly the same. I list as many things here as possible so that one might start to piece together what might work for their situation.
