Organics: know what you’re buying. Agribusiness owns lots of them #foodie Friday

Proposition 37 (the legislation to label GMOS that was up to vote on in California) lost. It lost because agribusiness poured millions and millions of dollars into defeating it. Many of the companies that paid to defeat it are in the organic business. I suggest avoiding giving them our business. (businesses listed)

Buy nothing day (ditch the Black Friday BS)

Now in its 21st year, Buy Nothing Day is celebrated every November by environmentalists, social activists and concerned citizens in over 65 countries around the world. Over the years, Buy Nothing Day (followed by Buy Nothing Christmas) has exploded into a global movement, inspiring the world’s citizens to live more simply and buy a whole lot less.

Winter lull…

Good morning. I've been going into a natural sort of winter withdrawal it seems...a lull of sorts. More meditation and contemplation, less writing. So the blog most likely will be quieter over the holiday as the timing makes sense. As always, should something pop up I may still end up posting. have a good long weekend everyone...

Adverse Childhood Experiences: Risk Factors for Substance Abuse and Mental Health

Dr. Robert Anda, emphasizes that most mental health problems and substance abuse issues are not genetically determined even if there is some genetic association. More important is the environment that people are subjected to when they are young. If we prevent adverse child experiences we will prevent most of what gets labeled mental illness. These injurious childhood experiences are very common. That means we need to heal society. That means we need to heal the whole family. That means we need to heal ourselves.

Escape Fire: The Fight to Rescue American Healthcare (and a collection of other info)

We don't have a healthcare system in this country. We have a disease management system.

The wounded healer

“Our sorrows and wounds are healed only when we touch them with compassion” ~ Buddha “The doctor is effective only when he himself is affected. Only the wounded physician heals.” ~ Carl Jung “When I stand before thee at the day’s end, thou shalt see my scars and know that I had my wounds and also my healing.” ~ Rabindranath Tagore (resources and info included)

Red wine poached apples. #foodie Friday

We don't eat dessert often. When I do make dessert it's something like this. These are really delicious as well as beautiful and wholesome too. The red wine makes for a delightfully striking look, but you can use brandy instead, too. I actually prefer the flavor with brandy, but you can't beat this red color and honestly it's pretty close in terms of yumminess too. Of note, all the alcohol is cooked out of this so there is no alcohol left in it by the time the dish is served.

Info on food allergies: they can affect body & mind both. #foodie Friday

A synopsis of how food allergies work. (food intolerances is really a better word for it! but the term allergy is used pretty much everywhere) Most people with food intolerances have no idea they have them. The only reason I learned about my own is because the impetus to become healthy became so great I started doing lots of research about healing naturally. It's not worth becoming as ill as I did before finding out if they effect you at all. If you feel at all crappy in general it's worth finding out if what you're eating may be part of the problem.
