We all have stories and context — diagnosis try to strip that away from us
Everything that happens in our lives (and all our encounters with psychiatry) are SITUATIONAL. Always. There is no such thing as a clinical depression without a "situation." That is a ludicrous and destructive fantasy. The same is true for anyone with any diagnosis. Schizophrenia, bipolar, anxiety, OCD. We all have stories and context. Diagnosis try to strip that away from us. The fact is EVERY single person with a diagnosis has an individual, unique story and context. Everything matters. Diagnosis (as currently most frequently used) are reductionistic lies that try to remove us from the fabric of our lives. ...
Homemade ghee (clarified butter) #Foodie Friday
It's been a long time since I did a food post. I suppose some of you don't know that I do that sometimes. There is a collection here on Beyond Meds. I also have a food blog that I've not posted on in a long time that has a lot more variation because I was doing it while my diet kept changing and changing as I learned what my body needed at any given time. ...
Depression as pain
So much talk of disease these days. Depression is a disease. Mental illness is a disease. -- The language of disease is soothing: there is nothing wrong with you, you are not crazy, you are not different, you are not “less.” You just have a disease. Like diabetes. -- Type 1 diabetes is a lifelong condition: you take your insulin, you are fine (well, sorta: you also have a shorter life expectancy and likelihood of nerve damage, eye damage, etc.). So is the “disease” of mental illness. Nothing to be ashamed of. It doesn’t mean you’re weak, or that someone hurt you. It’s no one’s fault. -- So here’s what’s wrong with this lovely, guilt-free approach to mental pain. one: it dooms you to a lifetime of disability. You are a lifetime depressive, bipolar, OCD sufferer, schizophrenic. The disease is here to stay. ... [click on title to read the rest]
Addiction in a Consumer Culture
For me addiction is about having trouble letting go of ANYTHING that has ever been helpful. That includes people, food, experiences, substances of all kinds etc. I have no conventionally understood addictions right now, but I am deeply resonant with the concept of addiction. Our consumer oriented culture teaches us to cling to everything. Healing for me is learning to stop clinging. Completely. ...
Bridging the Patient-Professional Divide
Bridging the Patient-Professional Divide ~~ A 2007 UK study by the Royal College of Psychiatrists revealed that prejudicial treatment of mentally ill patients extends to physical medical care; they receive poorer quality of care and doctors spend less time with them possibly leading to higher rates of death and preventable disease. Though tragic, the more scandalous aspect of the phenomena is the fact that mental health professionals apply the same prejudices to those whom they attempt to treat. The worst thing someone in mental distress can experience is dehumanizing treatment from other human beings who are supposed to be caring for them. I suppose as long as we continue to label people as ill and abnormal due to mental distress this will continue. We create a class of people who aren’t quite like everyone else.

mental health in a sick society
Mental health in a sick society: Consider the possibility that sensitive folks are not mentally ill. "It is no measure of health to be well-adjusted to a sick society." - Krishnamurti Who are the really sick ones in our society? Those who pretend we are not all connected. Those who imagine they are not part of the sickness that impacts every human being.
On therapy
Many therapists have not emancipated themselves from their training and think they are there to fix you. They are potentially dangerous. Trust yourself. If your therapist doesn't encourage you to trust yourself, do not trust them.
I have certainly found meaningful support only from those who treat me as an equal. ... [click on title to read more]
Show Yourself
Mystical loveliness. I've shared Ayla Nereo's music before. See: Life Bound Friend
My favorite lyrics from this song are:
I release you. I receive you.
I release you. I receive you.
and
I do not show this skin for you
I show myself to know myself
I show it for the Earth from which I came
my prayer is for you to do the same ... [click on title to see more and listen too]
