Food as medicine. Food sensitivities, too.

Food and diet has been critically important to my healing journey. Sensitivities are profound teachers that humble me again and again and teach me all manner of things about the nature of being human. I am finding more and more people who understand them in this way. What we are finding is that there is some spiritual significance in the very real (and sometimes potentially deadly) physical, biological and physiological reactions that so many people on the planet are experiencing with foods that used to be safe to eat. Of course there is also environmental significance to the phenomena. ...

How to let altruism be your guide

Consider the banality of goodness. --- What is altruism? Put simply, it's the wish that other people may be happy. And, says Matthieu Ricard, a happiness researcher and a Buddhist monk, altruism is also a great lens for making decisions, both for the short and long term, in work and in life. … [click on title for the rest of the post]

Thinking Upstream: Winning Real Mental Health Reform By Joining the Anti-Corruption Movement

By Will Hall -- Aren’t most of the people we work with, I ask, really facing the problem of poverty in our society? Don’t homelessness, the criminal justice system, child abuse, lack of jobs with adequate pay, lack of funding for substance abuse programs — aren’t these the issues we see on a day to day basis when we talk with people diagnosed with a mental disorder? Aren’t these the “stressors” we know that turn coping day to day into collapse and crisis? And among those who are more middle class and privileged, isn’t there a terrible stress around lack of adequate childcare, a heavy consumer and student debt, a scramble to keep up with 60 hour work weeks, a despair about the future in a world of ecological extinction, fear of falling behind, substance problems, failure to prevent or heal child abuse, and a media-saturated and materialist world that seems to have no real space to be human? -- When we sit and listen to people we find a society in crisis from multiple issues, a crisis that is affecting everyone. … [click on title for full view]

Depression (psych labels in general) reflect the dis-ease of civilization

"The health of the society and the health of its individuals are inextricably linked. If we can do so, we will be able to create a more equitable culture that optimizes the mental and emotional health of each of its ciitizens." … [click on title for full view]

Love liberates

being sensitive to the earth

By Jen Peer Rich If we took a mere 50% of our global weaponry and technology resources and applied them towards sustainability actions, we could live in a much different world. It’s possible to stop kicking the earth in the teeth with destructive behaviors. Why not address the suffering of our species and endless other species?

Fermentation is a way to get probiotics naturally #foodie friday

Today I'm pickling sliced onions. Not only do I get yummy probiotics, I also get a quercetin rich food with enhanced vitamin C from the fermentation process. I don't tolerate quercetin supplements but do very well with naturally rich foods high in quercetin. I've also had difficulty in tolerating probiotic supplements the last couple of years, but lately can again eat carefully fermented foods and kefir. Many good healing substances in natural food products made in my own home. I'm profoundly grateful for natural whole food in my healing process. … [click on title for the rest of the post]

Miracles happen: it gets better

I don't recommend the sort of illness I got that forced me into a forced disciplined mindfulness just to maintain any semblance of sanity. Still, there are many wondrous things that have come about as a result of it. I don't take most things for granted anymore. The mundane became wonderful. Just being able to do the dishes or sweep the floor is pretty amazing. Our bodies are amazing. Look at your hand, right now. It's a miracle.
