Editors note: I love Chris’s work even while I do not accept the label bipolar. This is an example of holding complexity and being inclusive both (he does the same for me and he speaks about this sort of capacity in the podcast as well). The reason I can do this is because the language has ceased to mean much of anything to me if it’s not being actively imposed upon me as pathology. I feel Chris. I feel the energy behind the language. I work on doing this with every human being that we might come to know all our brothers and sisters on this planet for who they really are. Language is necessary and it can also be limiting. I envision a world in which we all know and feel one another as the family members that we are. I recently responded to Chris and his position with this piece: Bipolar: contemplation about the psych label.
Enjoy this beautiful podcast:
In the latest episode of Waking Up Bipolar, Chris Cole speaks to the recent news of Kanye West coming out as bipolar, especially amid so much political and cultural controversy. What are the implications for the rest of humanity? How do we relate to the complexity of Kanye West and ourselves? There is an opportunity emerging for us to explore a greater depth of understanding, both in our own psyches and the collective.

Monica, thank you. Let’s have have a moment of silence for those of offended by and affected by those who intentionally cause us harm. Labels only perpetuate this harmful unreality further, in my opinion.

No such thing as bipolar. How much more bs are we going to swallow. I’m from Mars.
Monica’s wonderfully insightful and amazingly heroic, but perpetuating this term isn’t going to help, but add fuel to the fire of pseudo science psychology and misinformation for the misinformed. Without Monica’s blog, however, I would likely not still be living. It’s crucially important that we stick to things that are scientifically verifiable, and not sensationalized.
