This I’m sure has already made the rounds but it certainly deserves mention on this blog.
Marsha Linehan, founder of DBT came out the other day as a psychiatric survivor. She was once diagnosed as schizophrenic, in fact.
I found this first at Holistic Recovery from Schizophrenia and then also at Recovery from Schizophrenia and Psychotic Disorders.
It can be noted that the recovery she pursued once out of the institution was drug free:
“She relied on therapists herself, off and on over the years, for support and guidance (she does not remember taking medication after leaving the institute).”
It’s not in the least bit surprising that one who has lived through such trauma is the one to make breakthrough discoveries in how to care for other people who suffer in similar fashion.
DBT is not for everyone. Some people find it quite inappropriate for themselves, but for those for whom it works it’s clear it was inspired by her personal experience and that she knows something about healing.
