UPDATE: Geraldine Burns posted an update on HD.4554, the McMurtry Bill.
“I want to update everyone on the final support we got on HD4554 a bill regarding benzodiazepines here in Massachusetts. We received 36 co-sponsors from both the House and the Senate, Republicans and Democrats to the proposed bill; a very impressive number. From here this will now receive an official bill number and then be assigned to a committee. We are hoping to testify in front of the committee before this legislation ends in July. What we need to happen when we testify is for the bill to pass at that point. That still doesn’t make it law if it passes. Once we are at this step, I will update again where it goes from there and how it becomes law.
I want to thank everyone for the support, the phone calls and emails made to Representatives and Senators. This all helped to gain the support at the State House we needed.”
Geraldine Burns a longtime benzo friend and at one time a lifeline to me as friend and mentor both was a large part of getting this bill into play…If this passes it could set precedent throughout the rest of the country, making sure patients have informed consent and protecting current benzo victims. It will also hopefully set a precedent to do the same with all psychiatric drugs since many of us know that benzos are only one of the many very harmful drugs that cause protracted withdrawal issues and threaten our lives in many other ways as well.
