The dog (and the lady) sing the blues

I have always thought this video has the potential of going viral. It still makes me laugh every time I view it. I took all my videos off youtube for a long-time but it still had time to catch on and clearly it never has. This is me and my dog from about a year... Continue Reading →

Dare not to compare…

By Mark Petruzzi Since comparing ourselves to others is so often a happiness killer, and since comparing ourselves to others takes energy away from achieving our own desires, I am devoting this blog installment to this favorite past-time of overachievers, and the chronically unhappy—and most of the rest of us. First, I’m going to call... Continue Reading →

AstraZeneca to Pay $198 Million for Seroquel Lawsuits

This is all over the news and I'm feeling pretty burnt out on all of this so I've not been paying much attention. But it is a big deal so here you have it. Seroquel, like all the atypicals can cause diabetes and metabolic syndrome. I too gained about 100 lbs with Risperdal (an atypical... Continue Reading →

the “disgruntled patient” speaks

Dr. M, One of your colleagues, a psychiatrist trained at John Hopkins and Harvard submitted this article to my blog for publication. It is a review of Robert Whitaker's book, which if you've not read you should. She concludes her piece with this: This is not the book of a disgruntled patient who is angry at the system. It is the carefully researched and documented expose of a multibillion dollar industry that affects the lives of a least a quarter of the population. It is also an engrossing read, and an accurate depiction of the lives of people who are afflicted with these illnesses. I would recommend it to anyone who has ever used, or had a family member use, psychiatric services or been given psychiatric medication. - The Rise of Psychopharmaceuticals, by Mary Ackerley MD, MDH It is implicit in her statement that "disgruntled patients" lack credibility. I imagine that you have conveniently dismissed the articles on my site and my circumstances as the mad ramblings of such.

the dear old human experience is a singular, difficult, shadowed, brilliant experience

The ancients are right: the dear old human experience is a singular, difficult, shadowed, brilliant experience that does not resolve into being comfortable in the world. The valley of the shadow is part of that, and you are depriving yourself if you do not experience what human kind has experienced, including doubt and sorrow. We... Continue Reading →

Personality is not determined by genes and a life in psychotherapy: Sunday news and blogs

It seems to me the below sort of study supports those of us who do not believe what gets labeled as mental illness is easily genetically determined either. Indeed many personality traits are these days labeled as mental illness. Bad News for the Genetics of Personality -- Neurocritic The latest search for genetic variants that... Continue Reading →

Potential SSRI/SNRI and benzodiazepine withdrawal symptom list

The SSRI/SNRI symptoms are originally from this website on Effexor withdrawal. I thought after this list I would also put a benzo withdrawal symptom list. Unfortunately there has not been enough study of other psychotropic drug classes to come up with comprehensive lists, though in my experience in all my groups I've seen there is... The wisdom of grief, fear and despair”

I once posted an interview of Miriam Greenspan on this book of hers entitled, "healing through the dark emotions: The wisdom of grief, fear and despair."  After reading and posting parts of that interview I bought her book after my brother died. It's a wonderful book and speaks to any human pain or suffering. Not... Continue Reading →

On children…

I had this poem taped on the wall of my bedroom above my bed from about the age of 12 until I moved out of the house to go to college. It was a rebel voice for me---it spoke to me of the freedom I knew should be mine. Ironically enough, as an adult I... Continue Reading →

Another longish tweet ramble to share…

I've shared two tweet rambles from the past. Today I'm sharing another one from a couple of days ago. See here and here for the last two and some commentary on my tweet habit. I do twitter as a low impact social sport since I can’t really talk much these days, nor am I able to... Continue Reading →
