Happy Mother’s day!
The mother-child relationship is paradoxical and, in a sense, tragic. It requires the most intense love on the mother’s side, yet this very love must help the child grow away from the mother, and to become fully independent. ~ Erich Fromm
Thanks to all the mothers who dance this dance of love so that children may grow up, leave the nest and find themselves. It is no easy thing. The longer I am alive the more deeply grateful I am to my mother.
Of course most people (including myself) don’t have uncomplicated memories of their mothers. Some people have very difficult relationships that are difficult to heal. Diane D’Angelo wrote this piece a few years ago.
