Therapists and psychiatrists: your patients and clients need love. Can you give them that?

A status update on Facebook:

LOVETherapists and psychiatrists: your patients and clients need love. Can you give them that?

Someone in the comments said, that no, they do not offer their clients love because it breaks ethical codes. My response to her was this: love doesn’t break, indeed, cannot break, any ethical code…that is a misunderstanding of what love is. If love breaks a rule on the other hand, perhaps it needed to be broken!! Love is the highest ethic there is!

There are so many lovely, excellent and thoughtful comments on Facebook following this status update (many from therapists) that I want to direct you there to read them and perhaps participate. We are largely agreed there that people need love though some people prefer to use other language because the word love can be misunderstood. Ā GOĀ TO THE FACEBOOK STATUS UPDATE

And here are a few tweets written by me strung together on the topic here too: “Someone used the term agape in the thread on facebook…the term love has a lot of confusion around it really. Agape is a cleaner word I suppose. Frankly pure love in my mind is always the same regardless…it is the source of ethical action. Period. How it manifests between people will never ever be the same twice.”
