Bacteria: are we more human or bacterial? Weekend diversion

A pretty much totally off topic video from TED Talks.

A delightful talk from TED by Bonnie Bassler on bacteria and how it’s critical for our lives. She does go into realms I’m uncomfortable with too, though.

Bonnie Bassler discovered that bacteria “talk” to each other, using a chemical language that lets them coordinate defense and mount attacks. The find has stunning implications for medicine, industry — and our understanding of ourselves.

Healthy bacteria had profoundly improved my health. So I have a great interest in bacteria. It’s kinda like people: they can be good or evil.

I’m not so sure the implications for medication are safe or not. Medicine scares me. Killing all bacteria is always risky and dangerous and she does suggest that they may make new broad-spectrum antibiotics.Super-antibiotics make me nervous. Anti-biotics as often as they save lives mess you up too. My brother actually died of antibiotic overuse rather than cancer…anyway…

Oh wow I just posted this thinking the weekend was already here…not quite … but have fun with it anyway!!
