Psychiatric drugs in the news today…

Why it’s anything but obvious that the legal stimulant and amphetamine Ritalin helps relieve the craving of a cocaine addict I can’t imagine, but a study reporting such had to be done.

What I am struck with is how people don’t put two and two together. Ritalin is not so far off from cocaine and we give it to our kids every day.

The active ingredient in Ritalin, a medication used to control the symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, could help boost self-control in cocaine addicts, a study published Monday showed.

Wouldn’t be nice if all this money, time and energy were spent on developing non-drug therapies and treatment centers for all the multi-thousands of people whose lives haven’t significantly improved on meds?

Let’s get Soteria Houses in the pipeline rather than more neurotoxic drugs that don’t do any fundamental healing and often harm.

Medical News: Record Number of Psych Agents in Drug Pipeline – in Psychiatry, General Psychiatry from MedPage Today — Of the record 313 new drugs in development for patients with mental disorders almost a third — 90 — are aimed at treating dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, a new report shows.

Depression is second on the list, with 71 new medications in development, followed by 54 to treat schizophrenia, according to Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA).

There are 38 in the works for anxiety disorders, and addictive disorders and eating disorders each have 33 new medications.

Other new drugs in development target attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), sleep disorders, developmental disorders, personality disorders, and premenstrual disorders.
